Remembering Mike Robinson

The Fredericksburg Virginia and Rappahannock River paddling community lost one of its own on July 11, 2026, with the passing of Mike Robinson of Falmouth, Virginia.

For decades, Mike was a familiar face on the Rappahannock River and at paddling events throughout the Fredericksburg region. Whether racing, exploring a favorite stretch of river, mentoring a new paddler, or quietly volunteering behind the scenes, he embodied the spirit of outdoor adventure and service that strengthens a community.

Mike was a lifelong outdoorsman whose passions extended well beyond paddling. He was an accomplished rock climber, an avid racer, and a craftsman who was rarely happier than when building, repairing, or creating something with his hands. Years of carpentry, hard work, and a life spent outside shaped a body that was as resilient as the rivers and cliffs he loved.

Before those adventures, Mike served his country as a U.S. Navy Corpsman during the Vietnam War, carrying with him a quiet strength and sense of duty that remained evident throughout his life.

Perhaps Mike’s greatest legacy was his investment in young people. He generously shared his time with local Scouting programs and Venture Crew members, helping introduce countless youth to paddling, outdoor skills, teamwork, and self-confidence. He believed that rivers were classrooms, adventures were teachers, and that the best way to preserve the outdoors was to inspire the next generation to love it.

Friends remember Mike not only for his endurance and determination, but also for his generous heart. He was the kind of person who showed up when help was needed, who lent his skills without seeking recognition, and who built lasting friendships through shared miles on the water and countless hours around campfires, workshops, and trailheads.

His life reminds us that strength is measured not only by the miles paddled or mountains climbed, but by the people encouraged along the way.

The Fredericksburg and Rappahannock paddling community is better because Mike Robinson was part of it. His wake will continue to ripple through the rivers he loved and through the many lives he touched. The Great Rappahannock Whitewater Canoe Race (GRWCR) has instituted an award in his name, which will be known as the Mike Robinson Triple Crown Award.

Fair winds and smooth lines, Mike. You will be deeply missed.
