Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking Skills Course
Mehlville High School, Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, MO, USA
Develop the fundamental skills necessary to kayak in whitewater rivers with confidence. You will learn power, sweep, reverse and draw strokes. In addition to paddling strokes you will get practice in techniques like sculling, edging, bracing, Eskimo rescue and Eskimo roll. This 6 week format is timed to be completed just in time for the Missouri Whitewater Championships and the Annual Whitewater Clinic where clinic registrants will have the opportunity to apply their skills on the St. Francis River with safety teams in place.
All students are requested to volunteer March 22-23 for the 60th Annual Missouri Whitewater Championships on the St. Francis River, just 70 miles South of Mehlville. Free camping. You will never forget this weekend! Here you will watch our alumni use their skills in the country’s longest running whitewater slalom competition!
Minimum age 16. Bring quick dry clothing, a towel and drinking water. Quick dry, rash guard or SmartWool work better in this setting than swimsuits. You may bring your own whitewater boat or use ours. Join us for dinner after class.
We give you the skills. Where you take them has no limit.
