Appalachian Mountain Club Narragansett Chapter Summer Solstice SUP Paddle on Greenwich Cove
Scalloptown Park, East Greenwich, RI, USA
Please join us for an easy paddle in bucolic Greenwich Cove to celebrate the Summer Solstice and the start of the paddling season!
Plan on a review of equipment and basic strokes, and easy going paddling along the perimeter of the Cove past the Goddard State Park Boat Launch Ramp to Long Point and back. Distance to cover- about 2 miles round trip. Wind is always a key factor in paddling (esp. standup paddleboarding), and we expect it to be low given our early afternoon departure. Low tide is at 10:53AM- we will paddle upstream and back with the incoming tide on our return. We’ll meet at the foot of Crompton Ave (right off Rocky Hollow Road), at the bottom of the hill near the handicapped access boat launch across from the L.L. Paddling Outpost trailer. There are a few parking spaces on the right and left sides of the road, and many more up the hill at the dog park. If you park up the hill, you can drop your SUP off at the launch pathway. You will need your own SUP and equipment for this excursion, including paddle, lease, and personal flotation device (PFD). We may have access to an extra board or two so contact Mark if you need one. Please get there by 1:30PM so that we can get everyone squared away before our 2PM departure. You must wear a PFD on this trip. We also strongly recommend water shoes/booties, sunscreen, a hat, and of course, plenty of water. Please register on the AMC website in advance. Start at https://activities.outdoors.org/search/. Select Narragansett from the Group menu and Paddling from the Activity menu, then hit the ‘search” button. You will see the event and the “register” button. You will need to create an account with username and password but do not need to become a member. Everyone participating in this activity will need to complete a registration and Waiver/Release Form, including contact and emergency contact information. Any questions just reach out to Mark at hozho108@gmail.com. Looking forward to a beautiful day on the water! |
