Level 3: River Kayaking Instructor Certification Exam (ICE)

Fall City, WA, USA

This is the second weekend of a 5-day Instructor Certification Workshop (ICW). The ACA Level 3 River Kayaking Instructor Certification (ICE) is a two-day course from Friday, October 8 to Sunday, October 9 that assesses the teaching progressions, group management, technical skills, and safety/rescue skills covered in the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) to be an effective ACA Instructor on class 2-2+ river venues. ACA certification is recognized as the gold standard for paddling instructors.

Instructor Candidates should be capable and confident on class 2-2+ rivers and interested in learning how to teach more effectively. The 1st weekend of the course, the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), will be hosted from Friday, September 23 – Sunday, September 25. To receive certification, candidates will need to attend all 5 days of the course and complete all the criteria featured in the Instructor Criteria (see link below). Participation in the workshop does not guarantee certification.

This workshop has a gap between the IDW and ICE to allow students the time to reflect and practice on lessons learned from the IDW in preparation for the ICE. I highly advise blocking off the in-between weekend to practice at your local waterways.

ACA Level 3 River Kayaking Instructor Criteria can be found here on the ACA website, here.

If you are looking to prepare for this course, I highly recommend contacting an ACA Instructor in your area to schedule an ACA Level 3 River Kayaking skills course and/or assessment. This will introduce you the the skills you will be assessed on in the IDW/ICE.
