Level 4: Open Water Coastal Kayaking Skills Course

Two Harbors, MN, USA

Small to medium sized crew of 15 participants who want to work on and apply their more advanced/rough water skills with coaching from ACA Certified Instructors Paige, Ben, and Jamiah. Come join the Superior Sendies crew in the action and banter as we spend an epic weekend paddling our favorite local spots, ready to find some juicy snowmelt river mouths and gorges flowing into Lake Superior.

Spring is in full swing with snow and rain melting down the steep gradient rivers along the western shore of Lake Superior, anticipating that we will primarily focus paddling and surfing in current, with always the option to practice open water skills, exercises, and rescues. The MN “Northshore” is a playground for sea kayakers during this time of year. This part of the lake shore has a very steep gradient and once the snow and ice melts along the watershed, the rivers rise and we’re treated to tidal flow conditions. Each river mouth and gorge has a unique flow direction in to the lake which gives us enormous flexibility in deciding where to go each day depending on the wind and waves. Our main focus will be searching for spots that can offer either tiderace style padding and working with participants to develop and improve paddling and kayak handling skills in 3-6 knots of current and 1’-4’ waves

The Paddling Spots: Beaver River Mouth, Baptism River, Temperance River, Cross River, and Flood Bay
