The ACA Level 4 Swiftwater Rescue Instructor Certification Workshop is intended for professionals, volunteers, and group leaders who want to teach swiftwater rescue while improving their own rescue skills in the process. This course reviews rescue philosophy, priorities, fundamental skills, and complex skills for instructor candidates. Instructor candidates receive instruction and feedback on teaching methods, water rescue skills, group management, rope skills, and risk management principles.
The course is 5 days in length . Days 1-3, the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), will focus on personal rope and water rescue skills , defining technical skill performance indicators, lesson planning, teaching philosophy, structuring skill progressions, and creating a culture of feedback. Days 4-5, Instructor Certification Exam (ICE), will put greater focus on scenarios, scenario management, and evaluating candidate teaching skills.
Participation doesn’t guarantee certification. To receive certification, candidates will be evaluated on their teaching, group management, rope skills, and water rescue skills. Certification level, 1-4, is dependent on performance. Certification is valid for four years and maintained through class reporting and participation in periodic updates.
This course will take place in class II whitewater. River locations are dependent on water level and paddling competency.
Clients MUST meet the following general requirements:
– Current swiftwater rescue certification or equivalent ACA Level 4 SWR skills.
– American Canoe Association (ACA) Essential Eligibility Criteria
– Active American Canoe Association Membership + Instructor Fees
– Meet all ACA Level 4 Swiftwater Rescue Instructor Criteria [see ACA website]
