Level 5: Advanced Open Water Coastal Kayaking Instructor Development Workshop (IDW)

Tybee Island, GA, USA

Open to both Instructor Candidates and to those wishing to develop and improve L-5 skills. This 3-day IDW is a prerequisite for the ICE to be offered in February at Matanzas Inlet, FL. To be eligible for IDW credit, you must be a current ACA member and a Coastal Kayak L-4 Instructor in good standing. Those attending for skills development only must have a combat roll and rough water skills equivalent to those required in the ACA CK L-4 Skills Assessment or higher. THE BEST 3 DAYS OF FIVE WILL BE CHOSEN. The administrative/academic portion of the course course will begin at 9:00 AM, Monday the 24th, but the three on-water sessions will be chosen based on weather forecasts closer to launch dates. If conditions are favorable to safely meet L-5 venue requirements during the first three days, the course will conclude on the 26th. If not, we will continue to try through the 28th. Cost is $550/person for candidates, $450 for skills students. There are no refunds for failure to meet minimums or for in-place avoidance of days exceeding safe on-water work.
A limited number of NDK, Valley or P&H composite boats will be available for rent at $85/day. Sea worthy rotomolded boats are available at $60/day.
Those who anticipate significant travel and lodging expense should procure travel insurance. October is chosen as a month likely to produce L-5 conditions, due in large part to tropical storm activity off the African coast. Those storms sometimes arrive here as hurricanes.
