The ACA Instructor Emeritus program recognizes and honors the exceptional contributions of ACA instructors who have dedicated decades to teaching and advancing paddlesports education. Over the ACA Instructor Certification program’s 50-year history, thousands of instructors have been certified, with some serving consistently for 20 years or more. As these highly skilled and knowledgeable individuals reach a point where they wish to step back—whether due to age, health, or shifting priorities—their expertise remains an invaluable resource for students, Instructors, Instructor Trainers (ITs), and Instructor Trainer Educators (ITEs). The Instructor Emeritus designation provides a way to acknowledge and celebrate their legacy, allowing them to formally retire from active certification while continuing to share their insights, support the instructional community, and remain recognized as pillars of the ACA’s educational program.
After 20 or more years of continuous certification, an ACA Instructor, IT, or ITE may retire their certification(s) and request recognition as an Instructor, IT, or ITE Emeritus.
- Those approved for Emeritus shall be eligible to serve as affiliate members on all SEIC committees for which they hold appropriate knowledge or qualifications. They shall be encouraged to continue sharing their knowledge with ACA’s members, SEIC, and the larger paddling community.
- Emeritus status officially retires a certification. Should the individual wish to regain that same certification, they must complete the instructor certification process outlined within the ACA SEIC Policy Manual.
- Emeritus instructors may retain lower levels of certification. For example, a certified Level 5 instructor may request Level 5 Emeritus status retain Level 3 certification. Should the individual retain any level of certification, they are subject to all ACA membership, SEIC dues, and certification maintenance requirements for the level of certification they wish to retain. Emeritus instructors who choose to retire all certifications at all levels, they will receive an honorary ACA Lifetime Membership and shall be exempt from paying SEIC dues.
- Emeritus status reflects the total time an individual has held a particular level certification. It shall be approved by the SEI Department for any qualified applicant who has:
- Maintained uninterrupted certification for 20 or more years, reporting courses and completing updates as required, AND
- Has not had any disciplinary actions taken against them by the ACA or related organizations (e.g., SafeSport) within 4 years of application.
