The American Canoe Association is proud to recognize Dustin Miller as our July Instructor of the Month! Dustin is a Level 3: River Kayaking Instructor with a roll endorsement, known not only for his technical skill and calm presence on the water—but also for his generosity as a mentor and educator.

From Engineer to Educator

For 25 years, Dustin worked as a civil engineer. But after hitting burnout and taking a leap of faith into the “Beaver Crew” instructor development program, he found a new calling. “I fell in love with kayaking and teaching on the river,” he shares. Inspired by his father, longtime ACA Instructor John Miller, Dustin made a full career pivot in 2023 and never looked back.

Today, he teaches Essentials of River Kayaking on the Chattahoochee River at Settle’s Bridge Park and the “Metro Hooch” in Georgia. He also runs private courses on Class II rivers like the Cartecay and Upper Hooch, and guides overnight trips in the Okefenokee Swamp and Florida’s manatee-rich rivers alongside his dad.

Empowering Paddlers of All Ages

Dustin shines when working with beginners—whether it’s helping someone catch their first eddy, learn a new stroke, or finally stick their first roll. “Seeing someone light up when it all clicks is what drives me,” he says. “That thrill and confidence boost never gets old.”

One of his students, who met Dustin during their Level 2: River Kayaking Instructor Certification Workshop, recalls:

“Dustin was the assisting instructor when I took my L2 instructor course. He was thoughtful in his feedback and has been supportive of my paddling improvement journey ever since. He’s passionate about this field and making himself better constantly, and loves to share his knowledge in however he can.”

Looking Ahead

This summer, Dustin supported a group of young adults through Paddle Georgia, helping them fall in love with paddling during a week of river adventures. The experience affirmed his next mission: expanding access for youth and new paddlers. “There are too many kids who don’t know how amazing life can be when you throw in a little physical activity and adventure,” he says. “Kayaking is the perfect cure.”

With his eye on Level 4 certification in 2026, Dustin continues to build on his skillset—and help others do the same. Congratulations, Dustin, and thank you for inspiring a new generation of river lovers!
