For more than two decades, Justin Barstow has been a steady and influential presence on the Saluda River. Today, he serves as an ACA Level 5 Advanced Whitewater Kayaking Instructor and is one of the key leaders behind the growth and impact of Whitewater 101, a Columbia, South Carolina–based nonprofit dedicated to introducing community members to paddling and river stewardship.
Justin’s paddling journey began in 2005 when he first enrolled in a Whitewater 101 class as a student. What started as a new outdoor adventure quickly grew into a passion—and later, a calling. After years of involvement as a volunteer, safety boater, and informal instructor, Justin earned his first ACA teaching certification in 2015. That milestone marked a turning point: paddling was no longer just something he loved, but a mission to share the sport with others.
In the decade since, Justin has taught countless paddlers on the Saluda River, helping them develop the skills, confidence, and river awareness they need to thrive. Justin’s “rare intuitiveness” as both a boater and instructor allow him to meet students where they are, whether they are stepping into a whitewater boat for the first time or seeking advanced instruction to refine their technique.
Justin’s leadership is also woven deeply into the story of Whitewater 101. Once a well-intentioned group of enthusiasts, the program has evolved into a well-organized and effective 501(c)(3) nonprofit under the guidance of Justin and a small group of committed volunteers. In 2015, Justin and two fellow leaders earned their ACA instructor certifications and formally took on stewardship of the program with the goal of increasing its professionalism and reach. The results are unmistakable: today, Whitewater 101 offers safe, community-centered kayak education that emphasizes river safety, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
According to the individual who nominated Justin as Instructor of the Month, “It is very safe to say that the vast majority of paddlers on the Saluda River have been touched by Justin’s thoughtful teaching and humble leadership.” Justin has participated in every session of the program for the past ten years, often serving as lead instructor while also driving ongoing improvements to curriculum, program structure, and community engagement. His recent advancement to Level 5 status reflects both his personal dedication to professional development and his desire to meet the needs of more advanced paddlers in the region.
Despite his extensive experience and influence, Justin is known for his quiet, approachable nature—one that continues to welcome beginners, inspire future leaders, and strengthen the whitewater community in South Carolina.
The ACA is proud to recognize Justin Barstow as the November ACA Instructor of the Month and celebrates his continued commitment to safe paddling, community education, and the stewardship of our whitewater rivers.
