Level 4: Whitewater Kayaking Instructor Trainer Development Workshop (ITDW)
Poolesville, MD, USA
This Instructor Trainer Development workshop is designed for current paddlesport educators who are interested in training other educators. It can also be used for existing ACA Kayak Instructor Trainers as an IT Update.
This course is hosted by the Calleva River School and is facilitated by L4 Kayak ITE Jordan Taylor. Jordan draws on experiences training staff at the Madawaska Canoe Center, North Carolina Outward Bound, Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center, National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and at the Calleva River School.
In order to better understand teaching and learning in paddlesports, we will structure this workshop around four questions:
1. What do instructors need to know?
2. What do Instructors need to be able to do?
3. What do Trainers need to know?
4. What do Trainers need to be able to do?
With prior planning, Instructor Trainer Candidates can opt to teach sample classes on topics normally presented by ITs during instructor certifications.
We will also hold a practicum on skills specific to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in paddlesports.
Please note that this course is not focused on whitewater skill development, but does focus on standards for teaching skills relevant to L4. Venues may include classroom, flatwater and class 1-2 whitewater (L1-3)
