Course: ACA Level 4 Whitewater Kayak Instructor Update / Upgrade

Class Size: 4 minimum – 5 maximum
The ACA Level 4 Whitewater Kayak Instructor Update / Upgrade is intended for currently certified level 4 whitewater kayak instructors who are maintaining their certification, or currently certified level 2-3 river kayak instructors who want to upgrade to level 4. Participants are responsible for reviewing ACA instructor criteria and certification maintenance before registering for the course. This course will review industry best practices, present pertinent ACA policy changes, and explore relevant discipline specific case-studies. Instructor candidates will practice and demonstrate instruction and feedback on teaching methods, paddling skills, group management, rescue skills, and risk management principles.
Participation doesn’t guarantee certification. To receive level 4 certification, candidates will be evaluated on their paddling, teaching, group management and rescue skills. Certification is valid for four years and maintained through class reporting and participation in periodic updates.
This course will take place in class III / III+ whitewater. River locations on the James River in Richmond VA are dependent on water level and paddling competency.
Clients MUST meet the following general requirements:
– American Canoe Association (ACA) Essential Eligibility Criteria
– Active American Canoe Association Membership + Instructor Fees
– Meet all ACA Level 4 Whitewater Kayak Instructor Criteria [see ACA website]
Note: Once you have registered for a course, we’ll send you a confirmation email and a course details pack. Course details will include our liability waiver and release from, medical history form, course outline, packing list, meeting times and locations, and instructor contact information.
Packing List:
– River clothing, appropriate layers, closed toe shoes
– Drysuit or wetsuit is recommended for cold water.
– Neoprene gloves and booties recommended for cold water
– Helmet
– PFD / life jacket
– Water bottle and snacks
– Self care items
– Dry clothes
– Folding chair
– Personal paddling equipment (boat, skirt, paddle, etc.)
