Level 2: Essentials of Kayak Touring Skills Course
Rocky Point Park and Beach, Rocky Point Road, Essex, MD, USA
This is a two day course designed for participants who are new to sea kayaking or for those who are interested in improving their sea kayak skills. In this course, we will progress through various topics starting on land and then moving to the water. Day two of this course is intended to be a day of exploration around Rocky Point Park. There are various islands in the area that we can paddle to including Hart Miller Island. Route choice will be made factoring in environmental factors and group ability.
Topics include:
- Overview of Sea Kayaking
- Kayaking strokes and maneuvers
- Rescue techniques
- Wet exits and re-entry
- Reading water (tides, waves, wind, etc.)
- Kayak route planning
Bring your own kayak or inquire with me about renting a kayak and all necessary gear for this course. Additionally, wet suit or dry suit and other personal accessories may be needed depending on water and land temperatures. Please contact Winston for more information or with any personal requests.
