The ACA Level 5 Advanced Whitewater Rafting Instructor Certification Workshop (Oar + Paddle) is intended for professional guides, river rangers, avid boaters, and group leaders who want to teach whitewater rafting while improving their own boating in the process. This course features rowing and paddle rafts. Instructor candidate curriculum includes teaching methods, boat rigging, paddling skills, rowing skills, group management, rescue skills, hydrology, and risk management principles. All equipment provided.

The course is 6 days in length divided into two parts. Part one – the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) – will focus on personal paddling and rowing quality, defining technical skill performance indicators, lesson planning, teaching philosophy, structuring skill progressions, swiftwater rescue, and creating a culture of feedback. Part 2 – the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE) – will focus on evaluating candidate teaching skills, group management, and personal boating abilities.

Participation doesn’t guarantee certification. To receive certification, candidates will be evaluated on their paddling, teaching, group management and rescue skills. Certification level, 1-5, is dependent on performance. Certification is valid for four years and maintained through class reporting and participation in periodic updates.
This course will take place in class III – IV whitewater. River locations are dependent on water level and paddling competency.

Clients MUST meet the following general requirements:
– American Canoe Association (ACA) Essential Eligibility Criteria
