The ACA Level 2-3 River Kayak Instructor Certification Workshop is intended for professionals, volunteers, and group leaders who want to learn how to teach river kayaking while improving their own paddling in the process. This course reviews and polishes fundamental paddling skills for instructor candidates, as well as presents methods to teach new kayak students and improve skills of more experienced kayakers. Instructor candidates receive instruction and feedback on teaching methods, paddling skills, group management, rescue skills, and risk management principles.

The course is 4 days in length divided into two weekends. The first weekend – the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) – will focus on personal paddling quality , defining technical skill performance indicators, lesson planning, teaching philosophy, structuring skill progressions, and creating a culture of feedback. The second weekend – the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE) – will put greater focus on rescue skills and evaluating candidate teaching skills.

Participation doesn’t guarantee certification. To receive certification, candidates will be evaluated on their paddling, teaching, group management and rescue skills. Certification level, 1-3, is dependent on performance. Certification is valid for four years and maintained through class reporting and participation in periodic updates.

This course will take place in class II / II+ whitewater. River locations on the James River in Richmond VA are dependent on water level and paddling competency.

Clients MUST meet the following general requirements:
– American Canoe Association (ACA) Essential Eligibility Criteria
