Marcus Vanata brings passion, precision, and community connection to his role as an Advanced Swiftwater Rescue Instructor. Teaching primarily across the Southwest, especially in Durango, Colorado, Marcus has built a reputation for developing confident, capable paddlers and rescue professionals.
Marcus’s journey into paddling began at 17 on an Outward Bound course in Maine, where a month spent paddling canoes sparked a lifelong commitment to rivers. “Ever since that first little riffle, I was hooked,” he recalls. That early experience led him to pursue guide schools across the country, and eventually a career as a raft guide. Along the way, he discovered a passion for teaching that naturally evolved into instructing swiftwater rescue courses.
“There are so many amazing teaching moments in my career,” said Marcus when asked about a specific moment that stood out. “Teaching to my local community will always be a huge highlight. It is such an amazing way to connect with my local river community. I really enjoy teaching my guides at the company I work for. It’s a great way to build their confidence and watch them grow as professionals.”
Marcus also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to shadow Karen Locke during one of her Instructor Development Workshops in Moab, UT. Regarding Marcus’s participation in the workshop, Karen shared:
“What stood out most to me was Marcus’s intentional approach to professional development. Rather than rushing toward credentials, he is deliberately seeking mentorship, feedback, and real teaching experience. That mindset reflects a deep respect for the instructor development process and for the standards of the ACA.
I was also genuinely impressed by the level of professionalism, humility, and technical experience Marcus brought to the workshop. He was engaged with every part of the program, from observing instruction to supporting candidates and contributing thoughtful insights when appropriate. His presence improved the learning environment for the entire group. Several candidates commented on how approachable and supportive he was, and he consistently looked for ways to help others succeed.
Marcus embodies the qualities the ACA hopes to cultivate in its instructors: commitment to growth, dedication to student success, and a willingness to invest in the broader paddling community. He is not only focused on improving his own skills, but on strengthening the instructional culture around him.”
Marcus is also especially passionate about outreach efforts like International Drowning Prevention Day. “I had the opportunity to take part in a drowning prevention event with Jim Coffey and the Rescue Rendezvous team in Jalcomulco, Veracruz, Mexico. This is such an amazing opportunity for us as the ACA community to reach those outside of the organization. I think the information that can be communicated through this day can help save lives,” reflected Marcus.
The ACA is honored to have Marcus as part of our community. If you would like to learn from Marcus in person, look him up at Mild to Wild Rafting & Jeep Tours, where he works as the Director of Risk Management and Education and Training, as well as the Salt River Manager.
