Run of the Charles is the signature event of Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), the leading science and advocacy organization for the Charles River and its watershed. The work accomplished by CRWA over the past 50 years has significantly improved the health of the 80-mile long Charles River. CRWA has played a major role in restoring the Charles River, re-establishing it as a destination for paddlers and nature lovers alike.
Paddlers from across New England will compete in the Run of the Charles: Boston’s Premier Paddling Race, taking place on Saturday, April 27, 2024. Kicking off the paddling season, the event is the largest flat-bottom boat race in New England and draws over a thousand racers and spectators each year with the help of nearly 150 volunteers. Four distances: 3, 6, 12 and 14 mile races. The 14-mile is a relay. The shorter distances can have craft manned by 1, 2, 4 or 5 paddlers in eight categories: Open, Women, Mixed, Masters, Senior, Veteran, Junior, Junior/Adult. There are multiple types of canoes and kayaks that can be used, as well as stand-up paddleboards. For canoes there are Racing C-1, Recreational C-1, Racing C-2, Recreational C-2, C-4, Recreational C-5 and Outriggers. For kayaks there are Olympic K-1, Unlimited K-1, Touring K-1, Touring K-2, Sea Kayak K-1, Recreational K-1, and Recreational K-2. The 14-Mile relay race has different categories then the shorter three. Those are Corporate, Government, Open, Women, Mixed and University.
