Level 1-2: Canoe, Kayak, and SUP Instructor Update & Recertification Course

Join us for special update and re-certification opportunity at Lake Sebago near Sloatsburg, New York – conducted in partnership with the ACA Regional Activity Council (RAC). The regional leaders of RAC have worked hard to provide these high quality, affordable, and regionally dispersed opportunities for ACA Level 1 and 2 instructors within the disciplines of canoe, kayak, and SUP.

These classes are being offered regionally in partnership with the ACA Board of Directors at a special one-time post pandemic price to help more instructors maintain their certifications at the entry level where national student demand is the highest. We encourage you to take advantage of this one-time opportunity to get special pricing on instructor updates and reinstatements!

These events will be facilitated by several multi-disciplinary ACA Instructor Trainers and Educators for a holistic and enjoyable experience!

For currently certified ACA instructors, this event offers a one-day instructor update on Sunday June 2nd for one of the following:

  • Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking
  • Level 1: Introduction to Canoeing
  • Level 1: Introduction to SUP
  • Level 2: Essentials of Kayak Touring
  • Level 2: Essentials of Sit-On-Top Kayaking
  • Level 2: Essentials of River Kayaking
  • Level 2: Essentials of Canoe Touring
  • Level 2: Essentials of River Canoeing
  • Level 2: Essentials of SUP

The one-day instructor update costs $85, which includes the $10 Sebago Daily Use Fee.

For those who held an ACA instructor certification in the past which is now expired, this event offers a two-day instructor certification reinstatement opportunity on Saturday AND Sunday, June 1st-2nd for one of the following:

  • Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking
  • Level 1: Introduction to Canoeing
  • Level 1: Introduction to SUP
  • Level 2: Essentials of Kayak Touring
  • Level 2: Essentials of Sit-On-Top Kayaking
  • Level 2: Essentials of River Kayaking
  • Level 2: Essentials of Canoe Touring
  • Level 2: Essentials of River Canoeing
  • Level 2: Essentials of SUP

The two-day instructor certification reinstatement costs $220, which includes two $10 Sebago Daily Use Fees.

We are also offering a Paddlesports Safety Facilitator Instructor Endorsement for your craft which allows Level 1 and Level 2 instructors to deliver a professional, 4-year basic safety credential to camp employees, outfitter employees, nonprofit programming safety boaters, and more. This additional instructor endorsement is available for $50.

Important note: registration does not include gear / equipment; you will need to bring your own.

Accommodations:

Lodging is available on-site. Rustic cabins and a primitive ground tent sites are available for ACA members’ use at this event. Please assume you will be staying in a bunkhouse environment and will need to bring a sleeping bag or bedding for the cabins. Each cabin has electricity, a refrigerator, a cooking stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, table and chairs, dishes, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, tableware, screened windows and beds (no bedding). Each has a picnic table, fire pit and a charcoal grill. Most cabins have no running water but water is available nearby. There is a dishwashing station with hot water. There are two bathroom facilities nearby and one has shower facilities.

Housing in cabins is $20 per person; $20 per tent site; these fees cover the entire weekend and you can pay for these accommodations within your event registration. Camp tradition is to host a potluck dinner on Saturday evening. If you would like to join please plan to bring a dish!

What to bring?

  • Gear and equipment for your camping/lodging: twin sized sheets or sleeping bag
  • Camp chair
  • Food and water for your entire weekend. You will have access to a refrigerator, stove, pots and pans, etc.
  • Lunches could be on the water (please plan accordingly)
  • Proper clothing (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, closed toed shoes, strap for glasses, rain jacket, etc.)
  • SUPs must have a leash
  • Note: According to the Harriman State Park regulations, no dogs/pets are allowed in camp

  • Travel by Coach Bus from Port Authority
  • Travel by train via New Jersey Transit Train
  • You would need to make arrangements to get from the bus or train stop to the camp, approx. 4 miles away. Many options are available including Uber, Lyft, and local taxi services.
